Spectrum

Genre Jazz Funk

A very popular band in Japan during late-70's/early-70's, formed in 1979, although Spectrum had a short career and were extremely unknown to the rest of the world.Reputedly their self-titled debut album was recorded in Los Angeles and was released in 1979 on the monster label Victor.

Spectrum played a mix of easy-going Jazz/Fusion and Funk, obviously influenced by the US style, which partly explains why the album was recorded in Los Angeles. Most of the more demading listeners will find Spectrum's music even laughable. The overall atmosphere of the album is pleasant, full of vocals, horn sections and synths. The horn sections sound extremely fake, like they have been played through synths, and the keyboards have this awful 80's plastic sound, so the music is mainly based on childish instrumentation. The tracks are more than accesible with catchy choruses and sometimes they even contain a Disco-like flavor. On the other hand the vocal harmonies are nice to even great, especially when talking about Japanese lyrics, the funky bass lines are deep and enjoyable and the performance of the band quite strong. And I would even dare to say that a couple of the pieces (''First wave'',''Passing dreams'') in here can even be considered masterpieces regarding the style.
